Our Solution
Our team’s solution to this huge problem we call climate change, is to start with reducing our daily wastes; reducing food wastes, to be more specific. Everyday, there is always some place where, for example, someone perhaps has their lunch, but throws out 70% of that food into the garbage, which eventually leads to a landfill that further increases the amount of carbon (CO2) that is emitted into our atmosphere. Our goal is to have our communities become more responsible with the food we eat; to not be wasteful with what we’re given; to stop our home’s condition from worsening; and for all of us to enhance our quality of life. We also aim to lessen our involvement in receiving and relying on imported goods and improve Maui’s system of food waste, that there will be little to none to help our environment and use our limited resources wisely. Reducing food waste can make Maui more sustainable as well as fight the effects of climate change. We will be able to share our research on how reducing food waste can not only fight climate change, but allow Maui to become more sustainable and independent from out-of-state importers. Our team is working to implement large scale composting facilities which will result in decreasing methane emissions while creating nitrogen free fertilizers.

CO2 Reduction
Potential Benefits And Drawbacks
By reducing and properly composting the amounts of food waste being decomposed in landfills, we can limit methane emissions and replace the harmful nitrous oxide filled fertilizers as well. The now composted food can act as a new fertilizer nourishing the soil would restore the soil back into being an efficient carbon sink. We can also provide more food that has been redirected to the 7.4% of Hawaii that is food insecure. By reducing food waste we in turn reduce demand on out-of-state imports which also reduces fossil fuel emissions. This would lessen the stress put on agriculture companies that produce excess food. The process of reducing food waste may be difficult if the government doesn't comply. If the government doesn't take our solution seriously, corporations and businesses may not cooperate.
