What is Human Caused Climate Change?
Climate change is a natural process that happens slowly over a long period of time. Unfortunately, humans have dramatically sped up this process by burning fossil fuels to power their industries. As people burn fossil fuels, the greenhouse gases trapped in these fuels are released into the atmosphere. These gases trap heat into the atmosphere to keep the Earth from freezing. The increase of greenhouse gases that have entered the atmosphere due to human activities have caused rapid heating of the environment. Along with ocean acidification, food waste, deforestation, and farming systems the Earth has seen a sudden spike in greenhouse gas emissions.

Food Waste in Hawaii
Hawaii is heavily reliant on importation from out of state corporations. Currently 90% of the food in Hawaii is imported. Of these imported goods, 26% end up in the landfill, wasting an estimate of 1 billion dollars a year. In landfills food decomposes and produces a byproduct of methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas 10 times more potent than carbon dioxide. As we waste food and emit greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, 7.4% of households in Hawaii have food insecurities.
