Our goal
As students, we want to make our school better for us, our peers, teachers, and staff. As we start this project, our aim will be to help make sure food wastes at Kihei Charter are composted, alongside the Eco Club of the school who also shares this vision, helping our environment as well.
Potential Plans
To reduce the food waste produced by Kihei Charter and our community, our school could partner with local grocery stores. Within this partnership, compostable waste produced by these stores would be collected by our students and staff to be later composted on school grounds. When compost is produced from this process Kihei Charter can use it to fertilize our garden or donate it back into the community.

Eco Club
|
Currently, the Eco Club is doing a similar operation. The Eco Club along with Maui Huliau have conducted a school waste audit to create a zero waste cafeteria. Following the Eco Clubs lead, we can use their already designated composting areas to reduce the waste from grocery stores as well. The Eco Club has provided the freshman students with bamboo cutlery and is doing their part to create a sustainable school environment.

Benefits
Through this program, Kihei Charter and local groceries will be decreasing the amount of compostables in landfills. With this decreasing waste, less methane will be emitted locally. This process of turning our school into a small composting center will help Maui become more sustainable and teach students the importance of proper disposal of food waste. This will also lead Kihei Charter closer to their goal of becoming environmentally friendly.
